Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei has said it will launch its first Windows Phone 8 smartphone for US users later this month. The W1 phone is a version of the Ascend W1 sold in other markets, according to Microsoft. The device will be sold at Wal-Mart stores under a no-contract plan. Prices have not yet been announced.
Huawei is now the largest telecommunications manufacturer in the world, which has made the U.S. government nervous about opening its doors to Huawei products and U.S. phone makers nervous about the impact on their sales when the Chinese leviathan gets moving. Once Huawei puts its full weight behind Windows Phone, adding it to Nokia, Apple and Google will have competition they will find hard to beat.
