“I was struck by how quickly Windows Phones had made inroads into the smartphone market. Windows 8 was launched by Microsoft in October 2012, but – only six months later – by March of this year, the market share of Windows Phone had gone from 2.9 per cent to almost 7 per cent. This was at the expense of all three competitors, Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android and especially Blackberry, which is losing share rapidly.”
“I was also struck by the fact that people are turning to touch-screen technology because of their experience with smartphones, and are buying laptops and tablets as a result. A very large proportion of these people are going to buy laptops and tablets pre-loaded with Windows. To my mind, it’s almost a no-brainer that those users are going to want the same interface and the same operating system on their phone. Given the high quality of the devices made by Nokia, Samsung, HTC and now Huawei, I believe that Windows Phone has a big future, and that it can easily rival – if not overtake – both iPhone and Android.”
“Whatever the outcome, it’s going to be a fascinating contest between some of the giants of the telecommunications and information technology industries – quite possibly with their long term survival at stake. I wanted a ringside seat at this heavyweight match, and I believe there are many thousands of others who’d like to join me. This new magazine is for them.”
